FRENCH EASTER TRADITIONS

Easter in France is a time when families come together to celebrate this important event.

From Maundy Thursday the church bells are silenced until Easter Sunday. Legend states that during this time the church bells fly out of the church steeples and go to Rome to be blessed by the Pope. On their return journey they drop Easter eggs in the gardens for children to find on Easter Sunday morning.

Children prepare nests made from moss and leaves in hope the church bells will fill them during the night.

Although the Easter bunny gives way to the church bells in France you will still see chocolate Easter bunnies, eggs, rabbits, chicken, fish and lambs filling the chocolatier shop windows.

A traditional Easter lunch in France will consist of a leg of lamb, cooked with herbs, cumin, garlic and olive oil. There is not really a traditional dessert, more a time for people to indulge in the chocolate Easter treats they have received.

If you wish to experience a French Easter we would be delighted to welcome you to LPC Dordogne Holidays next year. Visiting a chocolatier is something not to be missed! The heavenly, sweet aroma is a delight.
